For a lot of us, climbing is much more than just a physical activity. It’s a chance for us to truly connect to the world around us; to feel the earths textures underneath our finger tips, to understand its unique grooves and of course, those stunning moments of reflection and peace.
But what if the wonderful world we climb in was no longer that? Climate change, coastal erosion, plastic pollution, rising sea levels and global warming are just a few things that are putting our beautiful planet under pressure. it can feel overwhelming to hear about how much our world is under threat – but there are things we can do to help and here at the Tide, we are aiming to be as sustainable as possible – So you, climber, can continue to climb and our world can continue to thrive!
So, here is what we’re doing!
The power of wind!
Did you know our premises is powered entirely by the wind! We have our own wind turbine in the field next to the centre and it even powers our wonderful pizza oven!
Wind power is an amazing source of energy, it doesn’t release any carbon emissions, pollution or any other waste as a bi-product!
We’re pretty proud to be running off natures power!
Supporting local Businesses!
By working with Cornish manufactures we are able to reduce our carbon foot print as our products, food and marketing material are all produced locally! This means that on average they don’t come from more than 50 miles away!
By using local manufacturers, it means our products spend less time on the road, using less fuel to get to our centre, resulting in less Co2 being admitted into the atmosphere!
It’s also an awesome bonus to be able to support our local Cornish economy too! We think that helping others on our doorstep is great and helps our wonderful Cornish community to thrive!
Sustainable clothing!
We have an awesome range of merch here at the Tide and we are so proud to make it as sustainable as possible! We work with awesome artists to design our incredible merch. Then, we source clothing that’s created from recycled material and organic cotton that’s been sourced and produced in ways that don’t harm anyone or anything in the process!
Then we combine the two! Getting out incredible designs screen printed on our sustainably sourced t-shirts! We’re proud to use the brilliant Blackwater Studios based just 30 minutes down the road from us! Plus, they use entirely water-based inks which don’t leach nasty chemicals into the water, even better!
Who gives a crap!

Okay, so changing our toilet roll to a sustainable alternative might sound like a small thing, but it’s actually a really unique way to help reduce plastic pollution and recycle a source that essentially just going down the toilet!
Not only this but they also donate an incredible 50% of their profits to ensuring that in the near future, everyone has access to clean water and toilet! A pretty awesome mission that we want to support!
Free Tea for Alternative travel!
Did you know that we offer a free tea to anyone travelling to The Tide as sustainably as possible?
We want to encourage our climbers to be sustainable too! Helping our planet is a group effort so lets work together, plus who doesn’t like free tea!
So far we’ve had runners, cyclists, car-poolers but we’re still waiting to welcome our first horse drawn carriage of climbers
